What are Flocked Christmas Trees?
You may not know that they are flocked Christmas trees, but chances are that you’ve seen them. Flocking is the act of creating the look of the fake snow along the branches. It can be a very beautiful decoration for your Christmas tree, especially when your decorations are elegant and celebrate the season of winter as well as the season of giving.
Flocked Christmas trees are created from a combination of a special spray adhesive so that the flocking stays in place, and cellulose created from water and wood with a special fire protectant. When done really well the flocking can look like real snow on the branches.
You can flock the entire tree if you want to. This creates a white tree that tends to look less realistic but can also appear somewhat angelic. The favored look by many is the creation of the look of snow on the outer tips of the branches like when the snow has been light or it’s in the melting stage. This tends to look much more realistic overall.
If you want, you can have what is known as a custom flocking. This allows you to determine just how far into the branches the snow goes and how much you want at the tip and the base.
You can certainly find the flocked Christmas trees in the artificial version. You can get the artificial trees with lights, flocking, and full blown decorations if you want to. If you are more of a do it yourself kind of person you might prefer to get some special at-home flock and create your own look regardless of whether you’re using a real tree versus an artificial tree. Doing your own can be a lot of family fun for the holidays. But beware, as it’s not as easy to flock a tree realistically as it looks. It does take a creative eye to really get it right.
Over a period of time it is probable that your flocking will start to flake off and turn a little bit yellow. Yellowing is often a sign of age. Contact with direct sunlight, cigarette or cigar smoke, and high levels of dust will speed up the yellowing process.
Flocked Christmas trees can be quite beautiful. You can get the traditional white or you can have it created in a flocking that is tinted a light shade of baby blue. New colors are coming out including pink and red.
